What is “Art”? According to Merriam-Webster online, Art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. Now that’s cool. What better way to describe what you do? Oboe, Maestro, DJ, Rapper, Singer…doesn’t matter. You’re an artist. Enjoy it. The rest of us are really jealous!
But, are you also a business person? That same dictionary says Business is “the activity of making, buying, or selling goods or providing services in exchange for money”. OK, that’s another truth. So, see? You are an Artist and Business person. Congratulations!
In order to be a business person you need customers. That means you have to please others and communicate with others who enjoy your art. Then you have to make it convenient for those users to purchase your art; be it music online, show tickets, swag or your latest CD.
That’s why we’ve created Plink. It takes a lot of time to practice your skill, it takes time to get to your shows and events, it takes money to purchase your equipment so chances are you have another source of income right now and the time you can commit to communicating to your customers is very limited. Heaven forbid you want to record something…that just ads time and expense.
Since you may need some advice, here’s a compilation of some of our favorite articles on Music as a Business (just click on the article name for the link). Good Luck!
